MRI and CT Scans in China: A Guide for International Patients

For an international patient, the value of getting an MRI or CT scan in China is not determined only by the scanner or the price. The real question is whether the examination can become a usable part of your medical record.

That means thinking about four things before you book:

  1. Is this the right examination and protocol?
  2. Can the scan be completed within your travel schedule?
  3. Will you receive the radiology report and the original image data?
  4. Can another doctor—in China or overseas—review and use the study later?

A fast scan that cannot be exported, a technically impressive scanner used with the wrong protocol, or a PDF report without the underlying images may have limited value for ongoing care.

MRI and CT are different tools

MRI

Magnetic resonance imaging uses a powerful magnetic field, radiofrequency energy, and computer processing to generate detailed images. It does not use ionizing radiation.1

MRI is commonly used for the brain, spine, joints, soft tissue, abdomen, pelvis, blood vessels, heart, and many other indications. Safety screening is essential because some implanted devices, metallic foreign bodies, or other materials may be unsafe or require special procedures in the MRI environment.2

Some MRI examinations use gadolinium-based contrast. The need for contrast depends on the clinical question. Kidney function, prior reactions, pregnancy, and the likelihood of repeated contrast examinations may affect the decision.3

CT

Computed tomography uses X-rays and therefore involves ionizing radiation.4 CT is often faster than MRI and is highly useful in trauma, chest and abdominal imaging, vascular studies, acute disease, cancer staging, and many other settings.

Some CT examinations use iodinated intravenous contrast. Patients with previous severe contrast reactions or impaired kidney function may require additional assessment before contrast administration.5

CMI practical recommendation: do not choose MRI because it sounds “more advanced,” or CT because it is faster. The appropriate modality depends on the clinical question.

Is imaging in China regulated?

Yes. Chinese regulation treats X-ray imaging, including CT, as regulated radiological medical practice. Medical institutions conducting radiological diagnosis must have appropriate registered imaging services, qualified personnel, equipment, safety systems, and radiological-practice authorization, and must meet quality and radiation-protection requirements.6

This does not mean that every institution has the same expertise in every type of scan. A hospital may be excellent at routine CT but have limited experience with a specialized cardiac, prostate, liver, fetal, neurovascular, or oncologic protocol.

For complex imaging, ask who interprets the study and how often the hospital performs that examination, not only what machine is installed.

Do not compare hospitals only by “3T,” “256-slice,” or other hardware labels

Hardware matters, but it is only one component of diagnostic quality.

For MRI, field strength is an obvious marketing number. A 3-tesla scanner can provide signal-to-noise advantages in many applications, but higher field strength can also introduce different artifacts and technical constraints. In its prostate MRI guidance, the American College of Radiology notes that both 1.5T and 3T can provide adequate and reliable diagnostic examinations when acquisition parameters and technology are appropriate, and that many factors other than field strength affect image quality.7

The same logic applies to CT marketing labels. A larger detector count or newer platform can enable faster or more sophisticated examinations, but the clinically important questions remain:

A scanner specification should therefore be treated as one data point, not as a quality ranking.

The most important question for an international patient: can you take the images home?

Ask this before you undergo the scan.

The international standard for communication and management of medical imaging is DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine).8 DICOM files contain much more than a screenshot: they preserve the image series and associated technical and patient information used by radiology systems.

If you may continue care outside China, ask for:

Do not assume that “I can see the scan in the hospital app” means “I can export the scan.” A hospital may allow image viewing through a proprietary cloud viewer while limiting direct file download. Chinese electronic-medical-record rules state that institutions may provide electronic copies of medical records and, where conditions permit, may provide copies of medical imaging data, but the exact delivery mechanism remains institution-specific.9

Report versus images: you usually need both

A radiology report is the radiologist's interpretation. The DICOM study is the underlying image dataset.

For a simple follow-up, your overseas doctor may be satisfied with a report. For cancer care, surgery planning, neurological disease, musculoskeletal surgery, complex abdominal disease, or an imaging second opinion, the original study may be essential.

Before leaving China, verify that:

DICOM itself is designed to support exchange of medical imaging information, but DICOM compliance does not by itself guarantee that every receiving system will import every file without issue.10 This is another reason to test the files early rather than discovering a problem after you have left the country.

Can I get the report in English?

Sometimes, but not automatically.

An international department may offer English communication or bilingual documentation. A hospital's main radiology department may issue its standard clinical report in Chinese even if the hospital has an English website.

Before booking, ask:

For continuity of care, a concise, medically accurate translation is more useful than a marketing-style summary.

How quickly can I get MRI or CT in China?

Waiting time varies substantially by hospital, city, urgency, modality, body region, and whether you use ordinary outpatient, VIP, international, or private services. CMI does not recommend treating a quoted waiting time as a guarantee unless the institution confirms a specific appointment.

For a short medical trip, ask for four separate times:

  1. consultation or order date;
  2. scan date;
  3. report date;
  4. DICOM/image-release date.

These are not always the same day.

For example, Peking Union Medical College Hospital's health-management service states that a specialty MRI health-check report may take several working days and that electronic results can be viewed through hospital digital channels.11 This illustrates why the scan appointment and the final usable record should be planned separately.

If you already have an MRI or CT from another country

Bring both the report and the images.

Prepare:

Ask the Chinese hospital whether it can upload outside DICOM studies into its PACS or review them through another workstation. Do not assume that a foreign cloud link will open on a hospital network.

If the new scan is intended to measure change over time, tell the hospital explicitly that prior comparison is clinically important.

Can a scan done in China be used for a second opinion overseas?

Often yes, if you have the necessary data and the receiving clinician agrees to review it. The key is portability.

For an overseas second opinion, the most useful package is:

The receiving hospital may still repeat imaging if the protocol is different, the study is outdated, image quality is inadequate, the disease has changed, or a new examination is needed for treatment planning. That is a clinical decision rather than proof that the original scan was poor.

Safety questions to ask before MRI

Tell the hospital about:

Modern implanted devices may be MRI-conditional rather than absolutely prohibited, but the hospital needs the exact device information to determine safe conditions.2

Safety questions to ask before CT

Tell the hospital about:

RadiologyInfo, a patient-information service of the American College of Radiology and Radiological Society of North America, emphasizes that CT radiation dose depends on the procedure and body part and that imaging should be justified by the medical question being answered.412

What to verify before paying

Use this checklist:

Frequently asked questions

Is a 3T MRI always better than a 1.5T MRI?

No. 3T has technical advantages for many applications, but diagnostic quality also depends on protocol, coils, sequences, artifacts, patient factors, scanner generation, technologist performance, and radiologist expertise. ACR guidance explicitly notes that both 1.5T and 3T can provide adequate diagnostic prostate MRI when appropriately performed.7

Is MRI safer than CT?

MRI does not use ionizing radiation, while CT does.14 But MRI has its own safety considerations, particularly around implants, metallic objects, and contrast. “No radiation” should not be interpreted as “no risk.”

Can I just take a photo of the scan?

A phone photo or screenshot is not a substitute for the original DICOM dataset when a specialist needs to review the examination.

If I can view my images in WeChat, do I have the DICOM files?

Not necessarily. Viewing, downloading, and exporting original DICOM data are different capabilities. Verify the export method directly with the hospital.

Should I repeat an MRI or CT in China if I already had one abroad?

Not automatically. Bring the prior report and images and ask the clinician whether they are recent, technically adequate, and relevant to the current question. Repeat imaging may still be appropriate if your condition has changed or a different protocol is required.
